10 Spring Cleaning Tips to Refresh Your Home

Spring is upon us, and once again it’s a reminder of all things fresh, new, and joyful.

If your home is feeling tired or needs a good clean, now is the perfect time to do it. To help you reclaim your home and make it feel refreshed again, here are ten of our best Spring cleaning tips.

1. Clean in short bursts

Cleaning can feel exhausting if you’ve left it a while between jobs or you’re doing a big Spring clean. Break things up by cleaning in short bursts.

We recommend sticking to bursts of 10-15 minutes or so. That’s long enough to accomplish one task or a handful of smaller ones. You can then either move on to another session if you’re ready, or take a little break and come back to it.

2. Clean room by room

Don’t be tempted to tackle every job in every room. Start small and work through each room at a time.

You might find it helpful to start with the room you’re less excited about cleaning. That might be the kitchen or bathroom, or it could be a messy bedroom. You know you best, so start with the task you least want to accomplish. From there, move through your home in a logical way until you’re happy with your results.

3. Create your own cleaning routine

A big Spring clean is a great idea, but you’ll also want a regular cleaning routine that you can follow to stay on top of things.

Have a look online for different cleaning routine ideas, then use these to help you create your own. Your home will have slightly different needs to anyone else’s, and your cleaning routine will be affected by your schedule and demands. That’s why it’s a good idea to tailor make your own that you can follow happily.

4. Declutter regularly

You can’t clean a room that’s full of clutter, which is why decluttering is so valuable. Make time in your schedule to regularly tidy up or declutter your home to make cleaning easier.

You might find it helpful to declutter one room every weekend, or tidy as you go. It’s great to get into the habit of tidying objects away where they belong after using them, and having dedicated spaces for incoming mail or paperwork. That way, there’s never much to move out the way before you can have a good clean.

5. Use only a handful of products

It’s tempting to pick up every new edition of a much-loved product, or to try something new just to see if it’s an improvement on what you already use.

Trying new things isn’t a bad idea, but try to only buy new if you’re running out. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a cupboard full of products and never be sure which to use when it’s time to clean. Keep your cleaning products to a minimum and there’s no more decision fatigue. Plus, you’ll find most cleaning products can be used for a variety of purposes anyway.

6. Make your own cleaning products

You don’t even need to venture out to the store to pick up cleaning products. Chances are you can create an effective cleaner from ingredients you already have in your store cupboard at home.

Simple cleaning solutions can be made up using common ingredients like white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. You can make a great all-purpose cleaner with just a handful of simple ingredients.

7. Switch to reusable cloths

We all love convenience, and those one-use antibacterial cleaning cloths are an easy purchase to make. Instead of using these, switch to a reusable cloth.

One-time use cloths are not great for the environment, and can get costly if you’re regularly repurchasing. With a reusable cloth, you only need to buy a handful. We recommend picking them up in different colors so you can easily identify them and their uses — for example a green cloth for your kitchen, and a blue one for your bathroom.

8. Pop your pillows in the washer

Did you know you can put most pillows in your washer? It’s true! This is a great way to freshen them up and bring some Spring bounce back into your bedroom.

Always check the recommended washing instructions for your own pillows, and follow guidance based on the materials used. Some pillows can be put in your washer, while others must be hand washed to help them stay great.

9. Wipe down your shower after using it

Cleaning the bathroom is one of those jobs that most of us hate, but it always needs doing. Simplify the process by wiping your shower down after every use.

Keep a window cleaning tool in your shower or close by, and use it to wipe down the sides of your shower after you’re done using it. This helps keep it clean, shiny, and free from dirt, so you’ll be able to spend less time cleaning it as part of your weekly bathroom clean.

10. Clean your oven door

Ovens can get pretty grimy and often build up with dirt quickly — especially if you’re an avid home cook. Give your oven some TLC as part of your Spring clean and give your oven door a proper clean.

Make sure you use the appropriate cleaner for this — look for one that’s oven safe. If you have time, give your oven a deep clean. If you don’t, leave this for another time or hire a professional to take care of it for you.
