Geocaching is a great way to get kids excited about going outside and exploring new places!  Who doesn’t love a “treasure hunt?”  This year I introduced my three rambunctious boys to Geocaching and it only took one ammo-can full goodies to get them hooked.  Now when I get done with work every day, the question is always, “Mom, can we go treasure hunting today?”

I love this because this is currently my thing to do with them.  Dad is allergic to poison ivy, and even though we have found a good preventative, he still does want to push his luck by traipsing through the poison ivy bushes in the woods here in Virginia.  He joins us in the Autumn/Winter months as some of those plants have died down.  But until then, I get to enjoy Geocaching with my guys as “our thing to do.”

What is Geocaching?

Here’s a quick video to give you an overview of what Geocaching is from Geocaching.com.

Doesn’t it look fun?  I encourage you to download the Geocaching App.  Once you sign up at Geocaching.com, you can get a free month trial of the premium membership here:  https://www.geocaching.com/freetrial/

Here are some tips that I learned along the way while introducing geocaching to my boys:

Make a Plan BEFORE you leave the house.  Spontaneous geocaching is not always 100% successful for little guys (and gals).  Look for the big geocaches, check out favorite points, read some of the log entries on the geocache before adding it to your list.   Initially we tried to just find all the large geocaches in our area, but after one time of walking through the woods by the lake near us for 45 minutes and NOT finding a geocache, I discovered that I needed to look to see when the last find was … that particular one hadn’t been “found” in over a year.  (Not a happy adventure!) So now I look for geocaches that have some activity on them, just to make sure that our journey to find will be worth it!

Filter the geocaches to search for BIG containers that have LOW difficulty and even LOW Terrain in the beginning.  You want the Regular or Large sized geocaches that have SWAG in them.  There is not going to be as much excitement from your kids if you find a micro-cache with just a log … they LOVE the big ammo cans that have a bunch of neat swag in it.   You can find out more about ratings here for difficulty and terrain.

Take a backpack with a small first aid kit, maybe a washcloth in a ziplock bag, SNACKS and water.  There were so many “spontaneous” geocaching adventures that I had wished I had the backpack with me for minor cuts and scrapes and just a wet wipe or washcloth with water.    Walking into spider webs, getting scraped by branches, bee stings, it all happens on those geocaches that are deep in the woods.  It’s just good to be prepared!

Don’t forget to bring something to trade – you always want to leave something to take something!  We always carry a bag of swag in our backpack (and in the car) for geocaching adventures and leave extra in geocaches that need a little bit more swag.

Let the kids find the cache!  I let my guys take turns using my phone to navigate to the cache.   As a homeschooler, I find this a good exercise for them to understand mapping, distance, direction … it really does give them some ideas of how far 50 feet is from where they are after you have found a few geocaches.   When we get to the geocaching area, even if I see it first I always give them the joy of finding the geocache.  Relax and let them find their “treasure!”

If you have one in your life, let a veteran geocacher take you geocaching to introduce you to the game.  I wish we had someone who knew what they were doing to take us on our first geocache.  We had a few DNFs (Did Not Finds) before we finally got the hang of it because the difficulty of the cache was just a bit more than we were ready to take on …

You can learn more about geocaching here at Geocaching.com and start your adventure!!  Also if you catch the geocaching bug after your first find (which I’m sure you will), check out Cache Advance and their awesome monthly subscription box, the Cache Crate!  This will help you enjoy the game even more!

Now all you seasoned Geocachers out there — be sure and leave your best tips on geocaching with kids in the comments below!!

treat-and-preventpoison-ivywith-homeopathyMy poor husband has been extremely allergic to poison ivy for years.  We have tried everything you could imagine to try and dry it up … every cream/wash you could image, special soap including jewelweed soap, and resorting to steroid shots at the doctor.  He was so desperate that he tried bleach on the recommendation of a friend and it turned septic and got into his blood stream.

Finally we asked our Natural Doctor if she had some ideas on how to  take care of this poison ivy outbreak.  Why we didn’t go to her a long time ago, I don’t know!  But she gave us the only remedy that has worked for him and of course – it was homeopathy!  Rhus Tox 6c was the answer  for his outbreak and his terrible rash cleared up in a week when it usually took MONTHS for him to get over it.

Now that I know more about homeopathy, I have found out that you can “immunize” yourself from poison ivy outbreaks.  If you know you are going to be clearing land with poison ivy or going on a hike with it present, you can take a dose of Rhus Tox 30c or 200c the day before and morning of the planned event.  Let me tell you this works!  My husband was taking Rhus Tox 30c for joint pain for several weeks and my kids happened to get into some poison ivy while playing outside.  Of course I hadn’t thought to dose them up and they all broke out, but my husband had been helping them undress and was sure to come in contact with the oils that they had all over them before getting them in the shower.  In the past, no matter how much he washed he broke out in massive rashes, spreading all over and was fighting it for weeks.  But because he had been taking the Rhus Tox 30c he got one small patch on his hand and it dried up in a matter of days – and didn’t spread into his bloodstream or itch like crazy.

I treated the little guys with Rhux Tox 6c several doses a day as needed (which they itched) until their symptoms were gone.  I also made a paste from Bentonite Clay and Lavender Oil for my oldest who got it the worst and applied it to his rashes to pull out the poisons.  We also used some local Jewelweed Lotion for itching.  In the last stages of the drying, I started applying Comfrey Salve to help the skin heal.  The boys were ready to get back outside in a matter of days, with the rashes completely disappearing in about a week.

Now that I know they have a sensitivity to Poison Ivy, I give the kids Rhus Tox 30c or 200c right before they go outside as a preventative.  So far they haven’t gotten anymore poison ivy even when I have known they have come into contact with it on our hikes through the woods, so I am happy with the results!   All in all, this remedy is a must-have for your medicine cabinet makeover.

My very first experience with homeopathy was Arnica Montana.  I had no idea what it was, but our Natural Doctor gave it to my husband to use after he had a minor motorcycle accident in addition to a few herbal remedies for recovery.   Amazingly, he found that he was recovered in less than a week!   It was years before our eyes were opened to the power of those little blue vials in the health food store.

2Now I find that I use Arnica Montana all the time in my home.  I have three very rough and tumble boys.  We constantly have a supply of ice packs in our freezer for all those minor bumps and scrapes, but for the major ones I reach for the Arnica Montana.  I used to have Tylenol and Ibuprofen but haven’t used those in over a year.   While I have seen reports online of how Tylenol and Ibuprofen cause liver damage and a number of other side effects, I personally have felt what Tylenol and Ibuprofen can do to my gut. I decided if there was a way to stimulate the body to heal that did not cause these types of side effects that I would be using it for my family.  The way that I have found is homeopathy!  I now have Arnica Montana 6c*, 30c*, and 200c* pellets and Arnica Cream* in my cabinet to help with bumps, bruises, shock, and more.

Now for three real recovery stories!  My son crashed his bike in the woods the other day and came in bleeding but saying, “I’m alright but I ran into a tree.”  The first thing I did was get him an ice pack and give him a dose of Arnica Montana 30c.  I noticed as I was shaking the bottle and about to dose with 3 pellets, he had a knot that was starting to bruise. While the pills were dissolving in his mouth, I was cleaning and doctoring his scrapes with Comfrey Salve and putting on band aids.  By the time I was done, the knot was just about gone and was not swelling up.  The bruising stopped.  He was CALM.  The interesting thing about this remedy is it is also a good remedy for shock, especially the person who is somewhat calm after an accident.   I gave him another dose in an hour and then again that night because he was moving slowly for the rest of the day.  We didn’t need anything else after day 1 for pain because his body was already recovering.   This is how homeopathy works – you take it, you stop when it is working and then take it again only if the symptoms return.

Another great use for Arnica Montana is for surgery recovery.  I recently had wisdom tooth surgery and took Arnica Montana the day before the surgery, the morning of the surgery, and immediately after I walked out of the dental surgeon’s office.  I had minimal swelling and no bruising at all!  My recovery was quick too.  I also sent a friend who was having extreme shoulder pain and anticipating the need for injections in her shoulder some Arnica Montana 30c and Arnica Cream*.  She emailed me a week later and told me that she was pain-free and had range of motion for the first time in six months after using Arnica for a week!

This remedy is a real powerhouse of a remedy to have in your natural medicine cabinet.  I’m not a homeopath, but I can tell you that in the time that I’ve been using homeopathy, it works for us. I encourage you to listen to podcasts, read blog posts, and find out more about this amazing alternative.

Reasons Why Homeopathy May Not Have Worked For YouThere are a lot of homeopathic medicines out there on the shelves of our local drug stores and even Wal-Mart.  You may have even found them on the shelf in the baby area for teething and colic and gotten them out of desperation for your child during teething time.  Maybe you have tried homeopathy in the past and just didn’t see results.  I have been there and found out that I had been doing a few things wrong when it came to taking homeopathic remedies.  So I decided to share some reasons why Homeopathy may not have worked for you in the past in this blog post.

Reason #1: You Took Them with Food or Drink

Homeopathic remedies should be taken free of strong flavors and you should not eat or drink 15-30 minutes before or after or the potency of the remedy will be effected.  The only exception would be water – you can have water 5 minutes before or after administering a remedy.

Reason #2:  You Took Them After You Brushed Your Teeth

I have heard from several sources that any type of mint or menthol would decrease the potency of a remedy.  I personally have found that since we changed our toothpaste to a cinnamon based toothpaste from a mint based toothpaste, remedies work better for us.  Either way, this goes with the previous paragraph – 15 minutes before or after brushing or at least until the toothpaste taste is out of your mouth.

Reason #3:  You Took Your Remedy and Then Applied Essential Oils or Used a Strong Cleaner

Strong smells can also effect how your body absorbs homeopathic remedies just like things you taste.  I personally took a remedy the other day for a sinus headache, felt it start working immediate … but then started cleaning something with an ammonia-based product (Windex) and the effectiveness of the remedy stopped working.  I had not given the remedy enough time to resolve my symptoms and the smell of that cleaning product “antidoted” the remedy I had taken that was working so beautifully to resolve my headache.    I love essential oils and have used them for years!  I believe there are many ways to treat things and essential oils definitely have their place.  But everyone who uses essential oils knows that it absorbs into your body quickly and immediately starts to work.  Do one remedy at a time, take your remedy and then use your oils in about 30 minutes to an hour later so that they don’t interact.  I personally stay away from the camphor type oils and peppermint oil while using remedies to treat an illness or injury.

Reason #4: You Store Your Remedies on Top of the Microwave or in the Bathroom

For some crazy reason we keep our herbs and first aid kit over the microwave – it is just a free space that seems to work for us in our kitchen.  I had my remedies there at one point and then I found out that the microwave can ruin homeopathic medicines.  In fact, strong smells, extreme temperatures, electromagnetic radiations, and magnetic fields – Television, computer monitor, cell phone, microwave oven, laptop and other electrical/electronic devices emit energy fields that could ruin homeopathic medicines.  So don’t leave your remedies in the car.  Don’t take your remedies in a room you just cleaned with a strong cleaner.  Don’t use the medicine cabinet, the moisture and heat from shower use can affect your remedies.  I store my homeopathic medicines in my closet and in the linen closet.  Perfect temperature, nice and dark, they should be good for a very long time.

Reason #5:  You Don’t Have the Right Remedy

If you have been trying a remedy and it is just doing nothing for you after a few doses, it’s probably not the right remedy.  It should start working after the first dose, you should be seeing improvement even if it is a little improvement.  Check out this link giving you an idea of what improvement looks like.  My husband had a sore in his mouth the other day and looked up his symptoms online and chose to try Arcenicum Album*.  Right after the pellets dissolved, he immediately felt the area around that sore start tingling and the pain subsiding.  He said it was “amazing.”  That is definite improvement and a right remedy for him.  Another example for me would be sinus headaches that I get when storm fronts move in the area.  I read this post from Joette Calabrese and learned about Kali Bichromium*.  After one dose, there was a small improvement – my pain moved from a 9 to a 6.  So I kept using the remedy for a few more doses to treat the headache and found relief by my fourth dose.  Sometimes it is immediate, sometimes it is not.  If there is no improvement, the remedy you have is not the one for you and you should stop taking it and redirect.

Reason #6:  You are Expecting a Miracle Drug (Your Expectations are Really High)

Last week everyone in my house was sick with allergy/sinus/respiratory problems.  We rarely get sick like this, so this is the first time that I used Homeopathy to treat my family instead of the regular over the counter medicines.  I started to fret because I wasn’t seeing the immediate “miracle-like” results that I had seen in other cases that I used homeopathy in that immediately ceased whatever ailment was present.  I took a deep breath and regrouped my thoughts in a different way – if I were using an OTC medication, I would be seeing similar results with side effects of hyperactivity in my kids – or drowsiness in myself with a drug hang-over days afterwards … so it gave me a different perspective.  It’s still medicine, it is just a different choice of medicine.  So I treated the symptoms that surfaced, left the fevers alone and let them do their work.  And guess what happened?  Instead of being sick for 2+weeks like we were last time, our family of five was better in one week.  The kids bounced back by day three instead of day five.  I can’t promised you that if you use homeopathy that you will “never get sick.”  In fact, minor sicknesses are good for us and should strengthen our immune systems!   But I can tell you that when you do get sick, it will help you process through the sickness better than OTC medications.

The point of this article is to encourage you to give Homeopathy another try if you didn’t see results you wanted the first time.  I’m not a homeopath, but I can assure you that in the time that I’ve been using homeopathy, it works. I encourage you to listen to podcasts, read blog posts, and find out more about this amazing alternative.

Have you tried homeopathy? If you have learned some reasons why homeopathy didn’t work for you in some situations, share in the comments!

HOMEOPATHY“You have to give him a dose of Claritin every day.”  My jaw dropped when my doctor told me this at a well-child appointment about two years ago.  One of my sons struggled with allergies – sneezing and itchy eyes everyday it seemed, and I had been trying to cut back on the over the counter medicine that I was giving him all the time.

“For how long?  Can’t I just give it to him every now and then?” were my next questions.  The pediatrician said if I didn’t give him Loratadine (Claritin) pre-emptively every day he would continue to have allergies.  The thought of my child taking a medication every day for the rest of his life did not set well with me.  In fact, it went against every instinct I had as a mother.  He was only 4 years old and already dependent on a drug?  Not to mention how the drugs made him act!  My kids were always hyped up after taking this particular medicine.  Heck, I was hyped up and jittery after taking it!  There had to be another way.

I tried essential oils (which I still use and love occasionally).  A blend of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint helped a little bit.  But the pesky sneezing and red eyes and itchy nose kept coming back.    I tried diet change (with the pickiest child in the world) and probiotics.  I tried herbs.  Nothing seemed to really help significantly and I always fell back to the OTC medications.

Then I discovered homeopathy.  I had just taken care of my other son’s ear infection with homeopathy, so I started researching remedies for allergies with a passion, determined to throw away the seasonal allergy medications and say goodbye to it forever.

Guess what?  We found a few remedies that worked!  The first success was Galphimia Glauca 30c*.  I found it on Joette Calabrese’s blog, which I had been devouring for remedies. This remedy was mainly prescribed for Hay Fever and at that time that is what we were dealing with … in fact, many of the farmers around our home cut hay in the spring and summer and early fall.  We always seemed to suffer when they did it, and this remedy really helped us all!

When he was mainly sneezing repeatedly, I opted to give him Natrum Muriaticum 30c*.  Usually this stops the sneezing immediately if not in a few minutes.  This is a fantastic cell salt and had multiple uses.

Another option that I carry in my purse is Highlands Seasonal Allergy Relief*.  Because I never know what remedy me or my children might need specifically when out and about and this blend of remedies usually hits exactly what we need quickly when it comes to allergies.

The best thing about embracing homeopathy was throwing out my Benadryl.  That stuff knocked me out and left me feeling drugged for days.   Now I take homeopathy and I feel refreshed and can still function.

My son’s allergy attacks have not gone away completely but have slowed significantly.  I give him a remedy when he needs it and usually it only takes one dose.  But I’m not giving him that remedy every day like I used to with the allergy medications, maybe once every few days during hay fever season and then once every couple of weeks as necessary other times.  I’m about to try another remedy that may resolve this once and for all – I’ll keep you posted!  But the best thing is that I am giving him something that I know is not addictive, I don’t have to do it pre-emptively every day for it to work, and it does not have the hyperactive side effects that other medications had on him in the past.

So replace your allergy medications with some homeopathic alternatives and find relief today!

Just a reminder – I’m not a homeopath.  I’m just a mom sharing what has worked for my family.  I’ve found homeopathy to be safe and effective for my whole family and am sharing because I get SO many questions about it from people who have never heard of it.  I was one of those people!  Homeopathy is not new – it’s been around for over 200 years!

Have you tried homeopathy yet?  Let me know your experiences in the comments!

HOMEOPATHY (1)It all started with an ear infection.  Do you get them in your house?  We used to get them at least once a year, which I know is not much compared to some of my friends who have kids that seem to get them all the time.  But let me back up a bit …

If you have read this blog in the past, you know that I have an interest in natural remedies in place of the regular over-the-counter options that have been marketed to us as the only way to “cure” your child of various illnesses.  I’ve used essential oils and herbs in the past, but nothing has really taken care of a recurring illness like I have discovered in homeopathy.  I ran across it in a webinar series on the web that was specifically on essential oils.  Joette Calabrese, who is a homeopath, caught my attention as one of the speakers of the webinar.  She spoke about how essential oils and homeopathy work together, but she grabbed my attention when she started describing these remedies and how they worked to cure different problems in her family and practice.  So I subscribed to her blog and continued to read about homeopathy because frankly, I’d never heard of it and I was a bit skeptical.  I had seen the little blue vials in the Vitamin Shoppe, and we had even a few remedies before on our Natural Doctors’ recommendation for poison ivy and recovery from a motorcycle accident (Arnica Montana).  I knew that it was the only thing that worked on my husband’s poison ivy and that recovery after the accident happened quickly as well.

A few weeks later, my son was getting his annual ear infection.  It all starts with, “Mom, inside my ear is hurting.”  His temperature started rising above 101 degrees and I was standing in CVS about to grab some Ibuprofen when I saw a “Kids Earache Relief Liquid” blend.  I picked it up and it was a blend of homeopathic remedies.  I recognized “belladonna” as one of the remedies because I had heard about using it for fevers in the podcasts and blog posts that I had been reading.  I decided to buy it too.   I dosed him right outside of the store (he was already running a bit of a fever) and then a couple of hours later.  Then he went to bed and I expected a L-O-N-G night.  But he slept all night.  When he woke up the next morning, there was no ear pain and no fever.  I was shocked.  I could not believe it worked that quickly and stopped the infection from progressing!

The more amazing thing is that not only did my son recover overnight from his oncoming infection, but when the time came again when he usually has his ear infections it never developed.  It was gone!

One thing I want to note here is that our cases of ear infections were much less frequent than most of my friends have had in the past.  I’m not saying that your child’s ear infection will go away permanently after treating one ear infection.   It works differently for every person.  If your child has chronic ear infections, you will probably see it pop up again … but in much milder case, or a shorter duration … with more time between infections.  As you continue treating them with homeopathy, in most cases the ear infections go away completely.

I have to say that I still love essential oils.  I like herbs too!  In the past for ear infections I used garlic oil, rubbed the outside of the ear with essential oils and more.  None of those things worked for us, nor did they keep the infection from coming back.  Not to mention that homeopathy is safe for everyone to use – babies, kids, and during pregnancy too.  Homeopathy worked the best for us, hands down.

My little collection of remedies!

Here are some of the remedies I have in my bucket now for ear infections:

Belladonna 30c – for throbbing pain, inflammation and fever.

Pyrogenium 30c – for infections and fever

Arsenicum album 30x – for burning pain in the ears, also great for stomach problems like food poisoning.  I give this to my kids when they say, “Mommy, my tummy really hurts!”  and not long after they are better.

Capsicum annuum 30x – for acute pressure and pain in the ears (this is great for ear pain is may not be an infection at all)

These are just a few of the individual remedies that I have since purchased to address more than just ear infections.   Since that time, I’ve seen remedies resolve things like allergies, stomach aches and pains, injuries, muscle cramps, headed off viruses and colds, and more.  This is the first post of a series of posts that I will do over the next few months sharing remedies that have worked for my family.

Here are some resources that you can get you started:

http://joettecalabrese.com – the most amazing homeopath that I have ever heard.  I’m currently going through her “Good Gut Bad Gut” course and look forward to sharing my review here!  Joette has a wealth of information on her blog, just search in the corner and find remedies for all kinds of things!  I highly recommend you check out her Quick Start Guide.  She also has a wonderful podcast.

Homeopathy for Mommies Podcast – I homeschool and ran across this podcast through the Ultimate Homeschool Radio Show.  Sue Meyers is fascinating and full of wonderful information.  One of my favorite podcasts is Help for the Stomach Flu.

WebsiteTesting-PinterestDid you know that there are 104 days left until Christmas?  I make an effort to try to stash away some cash for our Christmas spending and thought it might be a good time to start sharing some ways you can make some extra money from home.    The way I look at it, we have 11 weeks until Black Friday.  If I can put away $20 a week, that gives me about $200 to go toward our Christmas budget.  That’s not a whole lot, but it will get you started.

One of the ways you can do this is to review websites and apps!  Do you use the internet?  Do you surf websites?  Have you shopped online?  Likely if you are reading this post, the answer is yes.  If you can do these simple things, you can review websites.

I first read about website testing from a magazine in a story about real ways to make money online.  There are a lot of scams out there, but this one seemed like a real way to make some extra cash, so I thought “what the heck!”  I went home and checked out UserTesting (https://www.usertesting.com/be-a-user-tester).  It was a very easy process to sign up and I took a quick 5 minute test to see if I qualified to test websites.  It was so easy, basically I just looked at a website and verbalized my opinions of how that website functioned for the tasks that they assigned.  I was approved and in a week I had taken my first test.

Does it pay?

Yes!  In fact, you get an automatic payment into your PayPal account exactly one week from the date of taking the test.  Most tests are about 20 minutes long and you get paid $10 per test.  They have shorter tests that take 5 minutes that pay out around $3 and sometimes you can qualify for tests that pay more.  The biggest assignment I qualified for was a webinar session for 1 hour and it paid $75.  All paid promptly 1 week from the date of completing the test.

Now you can’t really get rich or work full time from doing this type of work.  I can probably make about $20 a week consistently because I only have a short window of time that I can test with peace and quiet.  But if you combine this with other income generating opportunities, you might be able to cover your grocery budget for the month or save quite a chunk for Christmas or a nice vacation.

What do I need?

Of course you need a computer, PC or Mac.  Then you will need internet and a microphone headset is helpful.  You can also take mobile tests if you have an iPhone, iPad, or Android.  You will have to download their testing software, which is not difficult.  They will show you a video on how to do it if you are technically-challenged.  You do have to be over 18 years old.  And of course you want to get paid!  So you will need a PayPal account to receive your payments.  Lastly, you will need to have quiet time to test.  I generally do this during nap times at my home, or when I have dedicated work time.

Here are some other website testing companies that I have used.  I single out UserTesting because I have had the most opportunities with them.  There are several out there, but these are the website testing companies that I have used:

https://www.userlytics.com/testers/ – payment ranges from $10-$20 but could be more.  I have taken tests with this company and have received payment quickly.

http://www.analysia.com/user.asp – not many invitations from this company, but they are legitimate.

http://whatusersdo.com/panel/ – had a few invitations, but not much success getting in a test.

Another resource for website testing: http://realwaystoearnmoneyonline.com/2015/01/9-companies-pay-website-usability-testers.html

Last Tip:

One tip I have for using UserTesting successfully is to keep your dashboard open in your browser when you are able to test.  When a test pops up, it will make a “ding” sound and you will know that a test is available.  You have to respond quickly to these because there are a lot of people out there who can take tests and once it fills the testing quota the opportunity is gone.  This is the best way to get the maximum tests opportunities.

Do you do website testing for extra cash?  Share your experiences in the comments, I’d love to hear how the experience was for you.
